This theatre for youth production was an English language premier of a Dutch play. In my first meeting with the translator and director, Manon van de Water, she told me four things:
ladders to the sky
soft with an edge
play it vertically
escher
I took these instructions and added my own ideas of surrealism, discovery, windows in the sky and twisted ladders to create an airy, multi-leveled playground for the production.
Two girls fall from the sky and land in the desert where they meet an artist. The artist draws the experiences the two girls have interacting as they try to get back to their home planets in the sky. This show is geared toward children ages 4-6 so I created a set they could directly relate to: a giant jungle gym to the sky. The characters clamber over ladders, poles and nets while the audience sits on the ground on furry rugs (giving the children a something to touch while they sit). I created a number of different ways for the artist character to draw the action of the play. There was a roll of paper on the wall that could be unrolled, a pad of paper she could carry around, and two Plexiglas light boards to create illuminated drawings in the air. We also created a fun way for the children to enter the theater space. They climbed up a set of risers that blocked the stage from view, then slid down a slide into the stage space creating an interactive experience for them from the moment they entered the theater.
